Jermain Defoe says Sunderland must start quickly next season

Jermain Defoe has told the Chronicle that Sunderland must start next season by flying out of the blocks. The Black Cats have an awful record over the last five years, with slow starts to the season becoming a regular occurrence.

They are keen to avoid a similar set of circumstances this year as they look to move away from being regular relegation battlers and Defoe says they must start the upcoming campaign flying out of the blocks if that is to become a reality. “We need to make sure we’re flying out of the block because if you make sure you’re fit the football and quality takes care of itself,” he told the Chronicle.

Jermain Defoe has extended his stay at Sunderland until 2019 after his goals helped to keep the club in the Premier League.

Sunderland confirmed on Thursday that the 33-year-old striker has signed a one-year contract extension, his reward for a return of 18 goals in all competitions last season in a side that struggled for much of the campaign.
