Sunderland boosted by Jermain Defoe injury update

03 Aug
2016

Jermain Defoe's injury is not "as bad as first thought", according to Sunderland first-team coach Robbie Stockdale

Defoe, 33, picked up a thigh strain during the club's pre-season tour in France and with the Premier League kicking off in less than two weeks it has been a major concern for newly-appointed boss David Moyes. But according to Stockdale those worries have been eased by the latest scan although a return date for the England striker is still unknown.

"I will be perfectly honest, Jermain has been for his scan and we're all hopeful it's not as bad as first feared. I wouldn't want to put a date on it but Jermain will be eager to be back fit as soon as possible, and although we won't take risks with him the news we got was positive."

Jermain Defoe's message to Sam Allardyce packs a punch as Sunderland striker recovers from injury

03 Aug
2016

Last season Jermain Defoe played a crucial role in keeping Sunderland in the Premier League. His 15 Premier League goals saw him finish third behind Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy as England's top scorers. He was also some 10 goals ahead of Rashford and seven ahead of Rooney. Who were both selected instead of Defoe to go to Euro 2016.

But, seeing as his then-Sunderland boss is now-England manager, there may be a chance. A recent injury, though, looked to put this in doubt as the former Spurs striker suffered a thigh strain in pre-season.

Sunderland's Jermain Defoe wants to score in every game going into next season

02 Aug
2016

Jermain Defoe is already off the mark in pre-season and with a trip to Rotherham on Saturday wants to extend that into the season proper.

Sunderland star Jermain Defoe wants to score in every game of pre-season - and carry that form into the season proper. The Black Cats kicked off their warm-up campaign with a 3-0 win at Hartlepool United on Wednesday - Defoe scored twice.

They travel to Rotherham United on Saturday before three games in France and another against Borussia Dortmund in Austria. The Premier League then gets underway with a trip to Manchester City on August 1. And Defoe says the Wearside outfit must aim to take a “winning mentality and momentum” into their first competitive game. “There is no better feeling than seeing the ball hit the back of the net. It doesn’t matter whether it is in the Premier League or a pre-season friendly, so it was nice to score a couple of goals (at Victoria Park).

Sunderland confident Jermain Defoe injury won't keep him out of Manchester City game

01 Aug
2016

Jermain Defoe could miss the rest of the pre-season programme with a thigh injury - but medics are confident he will be back for the start of the season. The 33-year-old hasn't featured in the two pre-season friendly games in France after picking up the injury in training.

Defoe will be sent for a scan over the course of the next few days to determine the extent of the injury, with first team coach Robbie Stockdale confirming the club won't take any risks with him. Last season's top goalscorer - who will be given a tailored training programme - is, though, expected to be fit for the opening Premier League game at Manchester City on August 13.

Stockdale said: "Jermain picked up a little thigh strain in one of the sessions. "You would do very well to get through pre-season without these little niggles so hopefully – once he’s had a scan – we will be able to make an assessment. "It won’t be a long injury and I’m sure Jermain will be keen to be fit for the first game of the season, and we are as well.

TALL STORY Sam Allardyce: Don’t call me a long ball merchant – I played Jermain Defoe up front on his own

29 Jul
2016

SAM ALLARDYCE insists his use of Jermain Defoe proves he is no long ball manager.

Allardyce has taken over as England manager with some people questioning his tactics and accusing him of playing direct football.

But after claiming he is hard enough to cope with the stick of being Three Lions boss, he went on the offensive when it came to his tactics and he cited the way he got Defoe to play for Sunderland last season, when he scored 15 Premier League goals, is proof he is able to play the beautiful game.

Allardyce said: “Style of play has always been a tag for me that I can’t shake, but I played with Jermain Defoe down the middle on his own at five-foot ten, the style cannot be associated when I did that.
