Slaven Bilic wary of exceptional Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe

22 Oct

West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic has told the London Evening Standard that his team will be coming up against one of the best strikers in the league this weekend in Jermain Defoe.

The striker was the key man for the Black Cats last season as his 15 goals in the league almost single-handedly kept them in the Premier League.

Sunderland can have no excuses warns Jermain Defoe as he prepares to lead them in ANOTHER relegation scrap

Striker whose goals have saved the club for two years running says it is no good griping about the way Sam Allardyce's England move hindered their summer plans.

Jermain Defoe smashed in a flying volley, wheeled away in celebration, and jogged off the training pitch. During a session thrown open by his new Sunderland boss David Moyes, frontman Defoe was the shining light.

His thirst for scoring, and delight at that sweet strike, was played out even during a windy, damp midweek practice at the Academy of Light when there were no watching fans to impress.

Does he always celebrate training ground goals? “You have to! But unfortunately there’s no cameras filming so you can’t watch them back!”

Jermain Defoe: This is my advice for Wayne Rooney

14 Oct

TRY telling Jermain Defoe his former England team-mate Wayne Rooney is over the hill.

The Sunderland striker turned 34 last week. That’s 34 years young according to a player who retains the same boyish enthusiasm he had when he first burst on the scene for West Ham at the turn of the millennium. Defoe had high hopes of an England recall following the appointment of former Black Cats’ chief Sam Allardyce. And he sees no reason why Gareth Southgate won’t pick him if he enjoys another prolific season.

So when he reads footballing obituaries relating to a ‘spring chicken’ like Rooney, his reaction is a mixture of bemusement and sadness. “Is age an irrelevance? Yes, 100 per cent,” he said. “Ryan Giggs showed that, Teddy Sheringham played until he was 40, Les Ferdinand was 38.

Jermain Defoe: How Sunderland's third wheel became the driving force for survival

12 Oct

It is hard to believe that, just a year ago, Jermain Defoe was a third wheel on Wearside.

While Sunderland toiled in vain looking for their first win of the season, Dick Advocaat could not find a place in the starting XI for his only proven top-flight goal-getter.

Unwilling to play 4-4-2, and unconvinced that Defoe could play up front on his own, Advocaat’s final weeks in charge at Sunderland saw the frustrated former Spurs star left kicking his heels on the bench.

Defoe is one of the Premier League’s all-time top scorers, yet somehow he found himself behind Steven Fletcher, Fabio Borini and Jeremain Lens in the pecking order.

Jermain Defoe insists Sunderland's spirit remains in good shape

12 Oct

Jermain Defoe says competing in the Premier League is harder than ever, but believes staying together, and positive, can save Sunderland from the drop.

Jermain Defoe says Sunderland’s spirit remains in good shape and is convinced that positivity and solidarity will lead the club to salvation. The Black Cats are bottom of the Premier League, in which they are still without a victory. They return to action following the current international break with a trip to second-bottom Stoke City - who are also winless - on Saturday.
