Jermain Defoe says it was 'meant to be' after notching his 150th Premier League goal in the 3-0 win over Hull City.

Manager David Moyes had lauded the 34-year-old striker ahead of the match and Defoe didn't disappoint with a brilliant strike in the 34th minute to open the scoring. Fellow forwards Victor Anichebe and Duncan Watmore were involved in the build-up, with the latter flicking the ball on towards Defoe who beat three men before rifling a low shot past David Marshall.

The club's top scorer ghosted past Curtis Davies, Ahmed Elmohamady and skipper Michael Dawson before netting - a fitting strike for a big landmark.

There were times during Sunderland’s chastening winless run that David Moyes said he had forgotten how to smile. It was hard to begrudge the Scot a rare opportunity to grin after his team defiantly came from behind to beat Bournemouth, but he was straight-faced again when explaining the importance of giving something back – both to the players from whom his coaching staff have demanded so much, and the unwavering supporters that made a 700-mile round trip with everlasting hope but precious little expectation...
