Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe joins the Premier League's 150 goal club

Jermain Defoe scored his 150th Premier League goal in Sunderland's 3-0 victory over Hull City on Saturday. In doing so he became the eighth player to reach the landmark, joining an illustrious list of names, including Thierry Henry, Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney.

Jermain Defoe says it was 'meant to be' after notching his 150th Premier League goal in the 3-0 win over Hull City.
Manager David Moyes had lauded the 34-year-old striker ahead of the match and Defoe didn't disappoint with a brilliant strike in the 34th minute to open the scoring. Fellow forwards Victor Anichebe and Duncan Watmore were involved in the build-up, with the latter flicking the ball on towards Defoe who beat three men before rifling a low shot past David Marshall.
The club's top scorer ghosted past Curtis Davies, Ahmed Elmohamady and skipper Michael Dawson before netting - a fitting strike for a big landmark.

Out of the deepest darkness comes some form of light, at last, for Sunderland. David Moyes has spent most of his post-match evenings this season sat alone at home with the lights dimmed and little to take solace from in his team’s performances. It is a depressing scene.

The Black Cats have mustered only nine league goals this season and Jermain Defoe has scored six of them. Patrick van Aanholt and Victor Anichebe are the only others to find the net.

There were times during Sunderland’s chastening winless run that David Moyes said he had forgotten how to smile. It was hard to begrudge the Scot a rare opportunity to grin after his team defiantly came from behind to beat Bournemouth, but he was straight-faced again when explaining the importance of giving something back – both to the players from whom his coaching staff have demanded so much, and the unwavering supporters that made a 700-mile round trip with everlasting hope but precious little expectation...
