'He has been incredible' - LISTEN as David Moyes hails youngster Jordan Pickford as key to Sunderland's revival

06 Dec

David Moyes has praised Jordan Pickford’s ‘incredible’ impact on Sunderland – and backed his young goalkeeper to get even better. The 22-year-old has been in outstanding form in recent weeks to help the Black Cats move off the bottom of the Premier League. His latest heroics came against Leicester on Saturday, with a stunning one-handed stop from a Wes Morgan effort late on ensuring a third victory in four games for his side. Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT, Moyes said of the home-grown star: “He has been incredible, he really has.

“It is never easy to put in young goalkeepers. In his first game he made a mistake against Southampton which probably cost us a couple of points but since then I can only say he has gained us points. He has been terrific. “He has won us games, he is playing with a great deal of maturity for someone so young and I can only see him getting better as he goes along. “It is great experience for him, being so young and getting the amount of games he is getting at this moment in time.”

Sunderland’s revival has also owed much to a player 12 years Pickford’s senior – Jermain Defoe. The evergreen striker scored his eighth goal of the season in the 2-1 triumph over Leicester and appears to be in better shape than ever, despite recently turning 34.

Why the evergeen Jermain Defoe deserves an England recall

05 Dec

Harry Kane tells a wonderful story about the first time he met Jermain Defoe. "I was in year seven at school; playing on the street with my mates in Leytonstone," he says. "This Range Rover pulled up and it was Jermain. He got out and just said, ‘Do you fancy a game?’ It was him and his mate; keeping the ball against 10 of us."

Kane was 11 at the time. Defoe was 22 and had just broken into the England senior team.

It was an utterly spontaneous gesture – and one that Kane cites as one of his big inspirations – but which actually tells us far more about Defoe and the purity of his enduring enthusiasm for football.

Sunderland hero Jermain Defoe reflects on 2-1 win over Leicester City

04 Dec

Jermain Defoe's winning goal in Sunderland's 2-1 victory over Leicester City was his 250th goal in English club football. A Robert Huth own goal handed Sunderland a well-deserved lead, with Defoe doubling the lead from close range. It was his eighth goal of the campaign so far and he says the win shows how much Sunderland have improved under manager David Moyes.

Defoe told BBC Sport: "Leicester are a great side, the champions, but our energy levels once again were good, setting the standard from the first minute. "From the goalkeeper all the way through the side, everyone played their parts and did well, and it's three points. "You're now seeing what our new lads and our manager can do.

Sunderland 2 Leicester City 1: Jermain Defoe seals the victory as champions edge towards relegation zone

03 Dec

Leicester City are suffering an identity crisis, the defending champions who have sunk into a relegation battle, a team good enough to continue writing fairytales in Europe, while their domestic campaign slowly turns into a nightmare.

After casting a spell on the Premier League last season, the magic has gone for Leicester. Still so impressive in the Champions League, where they have already qualified for the knockout stage, this is a team that seems to be depressed when it comes to facing more mundane tests.
