Premier League: Defoe v Costa

14 Dec

Cheslea are the team to beat in the Premier League right now, with Sunday’s hard fought win over an in-form West Brom side making it nine wins from nine in the league, having conceded just twice.

On Wednesday Antonio Conte takes his side for a tough trip to Sunderland, who before this weekend had seemed to finally be getting it right, with three wins from four. However, a humbling 3-0 defeat to fellow relegation battlers Swansea on Saturday sent David Moyes’ side straight back to the bottom of the pile in the Premier League.

With Spain international Diego Costa, arguably the best striker in English football at the moment, leading the line for the visitors, Wednesday’s clash at the Stadium of Light may seem a formality.

Sunderland's Jermain Defoe Praised by Former Teammate for Age-Defying Performances

13 Dec

Matthew Upson has championed the contributions made by former teammate Jermain Defoe to Sunderland's bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The 37-year-old ex-England defender claimed Defoe is 'priceless' for the Black Cats and praised his impact as 'huge'.

Defoe has been the standout performer again for Sunderland this season, scoring vital goals that have prevented them from being cut adrift at the bottom of the table. It was his goals last season that kept them in the Premier League.

Matthew Upson hails Jermain Defoe's performances for Sunderland

13 Dec

Speaking to Match of the Day 2 Extra, Matthew Upson has hailed Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe claiming he is priceless for the Black Cats.

The veteran forward was in superb form last season, almost single-handedly keeping the team in the Premier League. He has continued to impress this year, with eight goals in the league to his name so far despite David Moyes’ team struggling at the wrong end of the table once again.

Indeed, just like last season, his goals have once again given Sunderland a fighting chance of avoiding relegation.

Where does Jermain Defoe rank? The renaissance of a great goalscorer

08 Dec

There’s a wonderful simplicity that characterises Jermain Defoe’s career: a love of playing and a love of scoring goals. It sounds faintly ludicrous – a Premier League striker driven by the desire to find the back of the net. However, what has set Defoe – who, at 34, is still scoring at a remarkable rate for Sunderland – apart from his contemporaries is his insatiable, exploratory appetite for scoring. Defoe, a product of West Ham’s exceptional youth academy emerging at the turn of the millennium, has always been an erudite academic in the fine art of goalscoring.

While at West Ham, a teenage Defoe would often spend hours alone on the training ground attempting to perfect his shooting technique from every perceptible angle and distance, imagining how opportunities to score may arise, and re-enacting them strenuously. That methodology, honed throughout his 15 years in the game, has helped this fast-talking kid from London become one of the deadliest finishers the Premier League has ever seen.

Jermain Defoe deserves huge credit - out-and-out goalscorers are a dying breed, but he's one of them

07 Dec

Columnist Mick Quinn doesn't often praise Sunderland players, but he believes Jermain Defoe has been excellent for the Black Cats

It isn’t very often that you will see me praising Sunderland or any Black Cats players given the fact I am Newcastle United through and through - but Jermain Defoe deserves massive credit. This is me talking very much with my strikers’ union hat on. As a former forward myself, I cannot help but be impressed by the goals Defoe scores. In 14 Premier League appearances this season he has scored eight times - and that’s for a side who are fighting against relegation. ‘Modern-day strikers’ as I like to call them - the likes of Luis Suarez and Alexis Sanchez - run themselves into the ground and can operate as a lone forward.

But playing two strikers has very much gone out of vogue and the old-fashioned out-and-out goalscorer is becoming a dying art. Yet that’s exactly what Defoe does. He often does very little in a game, but then he pops up with a vital goal. What Defoe brings is priceless. The amount of points he has almost single-handedly won for Sunderland over the past 18 months must be in the 10s. He is that important to them.

His contribution should not be underestimated.
