Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe continues to impress at the top level... is the 34-year-old actually getting better with age?

03 Jan

David Moyes was asked a question last week - is Jermain Defoe actually getting better with age?

The Sunderland boss was reluctant to say that, at 34, Defoe was now at the peak of his powers, but he certainly agreed that there has been no deterioration.

Moyes, in fact, may have been wrong. Defoe's point-saving double against Liverpool on Monday took his Premier League tally for the season to 11.

Sunderland 2016-17; 11 goals in 21 appearances and counting

Another thirty-something who simply can't stop scoring at the moment is Defoe, who seems to be almost single-handedly leading Sunderland's survival bid. His two penalties against Liverpool on Monday took the former England striker into double-figures for the campaign and if the Black Cats do stay up, David Moyes will owe him a huge debt of gratitude.

Sunderland need Jermain Defoe to survive, admits David Moyes as West Ham target striker

30 Dec

Jermain Defoe will lead the line for Sunderland on Saturday – with David Moyes saying he’s their best chance of survival.

The striker is top of Slaven Bilic’s wanted list in January and Defoe’s future could depend on Sunderland being in touch with their relegation rivals at the end of the month, still in with a healthy chance of staying up.

Defoe admitted he wasn’t surprised to be the centre of transfer speculation because “the people that score goals are wanted.”

Defoe’s future could become a major worry if Sunderland, who face Burnley, drift out of contention at the bottom by the end of January.

North East Football Writers’ Association: Defoe and Pickford win prestigious awards

22 Dec

Jermain Defoe is the North East Football Writers’ Association’s 2016 footballer of the year. His Sunderland team-mate Jordan Pickford is Young Player of the Year.

The third award of the year for Women’s player of the year, goes to England and Manchester City captain Stephanie Houghton.

Defoe said: “I feel very much at home in the North East, so to win this award is a real honour. The fans here are very knowledgeable and so passionate - football is their life and that makes it a great place for any player to play football. I would like to thank the North East Football Writers for voting for me and the Sunderland fans for their amazing support, they have been behind me from day one and I dedicate this award to them. Sunderland is a very special football club that I know will be part of me forever”.

Defoe becomes the 37th winner of the North East writers’ award, and follows former Sunderland strikers Darren Bent, Kevin Phillips, Niall Quinn and Marco Gabbiadini.
