View From The Opposition: Big Sam hails 'electric' Defoe

03 Feb

Sam Allardyce has lavished praise on Jermain Defoe ahead of Sunderland’s trip to Crystal Palace, with the former Black Cats boss revealing his admiration for the prolific frontman. Defoe was key during the Palace manager’s time on Wearside, with his goals playing a pivotal role as Big Sam and the Black Cats produced a big run of form to avoid the drop.

And Defoe has been just as deadly during the 2016-17 season, with his impressive haul of 12 Premier League goals taking him fifth in the all-time rankings.

“We have got to mark Defoe,” admitted Allardyce. “That’s my main concern; the wee man is electric. We can’t afford to make one slip tomorrow with that man – he’s so good – one or two chances with Jermain results in a goal normally, so we need to be alert and very sharp in around our own box defensively to try and nullify him.”

The striker led from the front on Tuesday evening as his former club were thwarted at the Stadium of Light, with a big game against Crystal Palace coming up this weekend.

Read the interview below to hear Defoe’s thoughts on the upcoming clash and a satisfying stalemate against Spurs.

Jermain, a point last night against Tottenham Hotspur and a very satisfying performance on the whole?

JD: "Yeah, of course. It was a difficult game because they’ve been fantastic this season and they have some very good players. We knew we wouldn’t see too much of the ball but we would have taken a point before the game."

Six things we learned from Sunderland’s draw against Spurs – Ndong shows class, as does Defoe

31 Jan

Ndong raced to press the Spurs defence. Nobody followed and the visitors got out of danger easily. Yet the tone was set and his team-mates soon rallied to the Gabonese midfielder, who was a tenacious and influential presence. Bursting past players on the attack, sweeping up at the back, it was a reminder how he has been missed in recent weeks. Growing into the Premier League.

Keeping Defoe the best bit of business this month Sunderland look to have fallen behind their rivals in this month’s transfer market, but keeping Defoe could well prove to be the best business anyone does. Once again feeding off scraps and hopeful long passes, Defoe still had the nous and experience to cause Toby Alderweireld a few problems. Excellent with back to goal, will hurt lesser teams.

Defoe a shining light at dreary Sunderland; United’s depth a key strength: Premier League talking points

04 Jan

Following the latest round of Premier League matches on Monday, Thomas Woods provides his thoughts on some of the biggest talking points.

Defoe is the answer — for several clubs

Chances are that Sunderland are going to be relegated this season. They have a poor defence, little strength in depth and are losing several players to the African Cup of Nations (Afcon). They have flirted with relegation for several seasons now and nothing seems to change.  Their main glimmer of hope is Jermain Defoe, but the big question now is — can Sunderland hang on to him?

Defoe is one of the Premier League’s greatest goalscorers. He is seventh in the all-time scoring list with 154 goals, ahead of Michael Owen. The second half of last season showed his worth when his goals led Sunderland to safety. He barely needs a sight of goal to be able to score, which is what makes him such an asset.
