At 34 years of age, Jermain Defoe is still terrorising Premier League defenders - and David Moyes has backed him to take his career into extra time.

Defoe scored the 150th goal of his 15-year Premier League career, which took in spells at West Ham, Spurs, and Portsmouth before he joined Sunderland in January 2015. He scored 15 league goals last season to help Sunderland survive in the top flight, and has already netted seven times this term.

Defoe signed a new contract in the summer which ties him to the Black Cats until 2019 and, because he looks after himself off the pitch, Moyes believes he will have no problem playing on until he is 37 - or beyond.

“I think when you’re lean, you don’t carry any extra weight,” said Moyes. “I’m sure in his own way, compared to when he was 23 or 24, he has slowed down in some aspects. “But while he is still getting into the right positions and scoring, I can see Jermain playing on for a long time, His physical condition is very good, he doesn’t carry any extra weight, I know he’s not a drinker, so there’s nothing on that side to hold him back. That makes it a lot easier for him to keep his levels up.”
